Love and Monsters is an Excellent Post-Apocalyptic Action Movie

You don’t have to settle just because it’s the end of the world. Love and Monsters from Paramount Home Entertainment, is available now on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD and it’s an excellent addition to the post-apocalypse movie genre. Love and Monsters (Giveaway)

Love and Monsters, a post-apocalyptic action movie with a science fiction twist, doesn’t disappoint. In the movie, rockets destroy an asteroid before it destroys Earth. Unfortunately, though, the chemicals from the rockets cause the creatures on Earth to mutate to…..you guessed it….monsters. The main character of the movie is Joel (played by Dylan O’Brien) and he’s one of the few humans to survive, living in an underground compound with a group of other survivors. But, he desperately wants to reunite with his girlfriend, Aimee (played by Jessica Henwick), who he was separated from seven years ago. He sets out on a journey outside of the compound, fighting monsters and traveling with experienced survivalists, and even having a touching conversation with a robot. And of course, I can’t forget one of the biggest stars of the movie, Boy the Dog 🙂 Post-apocalyptic movies can be tricky but Love and Monsters is filled with a lot of humor, action, and heart. Dylan O’Brien does a great job as Joel, but the supporting cast, including Michael Rooker, add to the storyline. As Clyde (played by Michael Rooker) says about a boulder snail, “They’re very nice, you know. But they’ll crush your a** in a second.”

Is Love and Monsters Kid Friendly?

The movie is rated PG-13, due to action/violence, language and some suggestive material. Characters say different variations of s**t, a**, and he**. And there are several scenes where humans are eaten by the monsters. However, there are several comedic moments as well, which lightens up the more serious scenes. Use your discretion, but this movie is more geared towards older kids, unlike another Paramount movie, Sonic The Hedgehog. With that being said, my 8 year old son did watch the movie with me and he enjoyed it immensely. Just keepin’ it real.

Overall Thoughts

Love and Monsters pleasantly surprised me, in a good way. Post-apocalyptic can be very grim in nature. However, this particular movie has a positive message about perseverance, survival, and the importance of family and friends.

Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien), along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. After reconnecting over radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there’s nothing left for him underground, he decides to venture out to Aimee, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.
