I was provided with complimentary tickets for admission to LEGOLAND Discovery Center Arizona and the Sea Life Aquarium. However, all opinions are my own.
My name is Kristi and I have a new obsession. LEGO pop badges. Yup. I said it. LEGO pop badges. You’re probably wondering what pop badges are. They are basically collectible badges that you can apply to a LEGOLAND lanyard. And they are only available at certain places like LEGOLAND Discovery Centers and LEGOLAND theme parks. Some of them are only available on certain days. I wasn’t able to get one when my family visited LEGOLAND California and I’ve been on the hunt for a pop badge since then and I had my opportunity this past weekend.
My niece was in town for a visit during the 4th of July weekend so we decided to take a day trip to Phoenix to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Arizona and Sea Life Aquarium. I previously wrote about our first visit to the Discovery Center here and it’s been a while since we took our son to the Aquarium despite good intentions.
It was a quick road trip for us. The location of the Discovery Center and the Aquarium is ideal for those living in the Phoenix area as well as for those of us that are visiting from Tucson. They are both located in the Arizona Mills Mall, which is right off the freeway in Tempe.
You can’t miss the building for either places. The building for the Discovery Center is painted in yellow, and the building for the Aquarium is painted in blue. My son really enjoys the LEGO fountain out front.
As a family of all ages, we enjoyed many aspects of both the Discovery Center and the Aquarium. My mom also accompanied us, and she enjoyed on going on one of the rides with my niece. And there’s also plenty of places to sit down while the children play. For a more detailed review of the different areas in the Discovery Center, including the rides, please click here.
When we initially checked in at the Discovery Center, we decided to purchase activity books. At less than $5 each, each booklet contains activities that you and your children can do, as well as collect stamps at the different locations. I thought the price was well worth it. Not only did it include a LEGOLAND lanyard, but as you exit the Center, you can collect a badge. Both my son and I chose the badge for NEXO Knights and my 8 year old niece chose a LEGO Friends badge 🙂 More about that below.
Here’s the activity book we received.
Stamp stations are set up at the different locations. Here’s an example of one of them:
And finally, the infamous pop badge. I chose NEXO Knights since we saw it in the 4D theater. I can’t wait to add to my collection.
When you first enter the Discovery Center, you are ushered into the Factory Tour. Afterward, each child is handed a commemorative brick as they exit the tour.
But before that happens, children get to build a computerized LEGO 🙂 Yeah! Check out the graphics below. This is just a sample of what you can see.
These are minifigures that my son and my niece designed.
My son and my niece both really enjoyed this part of the tour.
Once you leave the Factory Tour, you can pretty much go to any area you want, like the movie theater that plays movies in 4D. We enjoy the movies because they have fun special effects like water spraying the audience members. They were showing three different movies when we were there – Legends of Chima, the LEGO Movie: A New Adventure and NEXO Knights. Both NEXO Knights and the LEGO Movie are recent additions to the Discovery Center. We were able to see NEXO Knights and we all loved it – from my mom to my 8 year old niece, to my 3 year old son. The special effects were amazing.
Just two cool kids getting ready to see NEXO Knights in 4D 😊
The last time we went to the Discovery Center, we really didn’t experience the LEGO Friends area. My son gravitates more towards the area where you can build and race your own car. But I was able to take my niece to the LEGO Friends area, where she was able to build with the LEGO Friends collection.
There’s also an area where you can watch a Master Builder create LEGO figures.
And last but not least, some pictures in MINILAND 😊
Seriously, how cool is all that?!
After we left the Discovery Center, we went across the hall to the Sea Life Aquarium. We couldn’t have asked for a better time to go, especially since both my son and my niece just saw the movie Finding Dory. They are both interested in marine life, and we all thought that the Aquarium was not only fun and interactive, but also very educational. I asked my son what he liked about it afterward (keep in mind he is 3 years old) and he said he liked that the fish were swimming, but noted that the fish didn’t talk. LOL. I also like that the Aquarium isn’t overwhelming for younger children – it’s long enough for them to enjoy, but also not too long to where they’ll lose interest.
Below are some fun pictures that were taken by the Aquarium’s photographer.
One of the interactive areas was the touch tank. This was one of the highlights of the day.
There are also several fish tanks throughout the Aquarium, filled with a variety of fish, including coral sharks. Our favorite part was probably the tunnel that made us feel like we were walking in an aquarium. There were fish below us, fish above us, and fish to the sides of us, including a turtle. It truly felt as though we were walking inside an aquarium.
There were also several places for photo opportunities.
At the end of our visit, my son and my niece both received a medallion. This is very similar to the pop badge activity at LEGOLAND Discovery Center. My son was very proud of it and wanted to wear it for the rest of the day.
It was a wonderful day, filled with fun activities.
