My Spy Movie Review: What Parents Need to Know
My Spy is about a CIA agent named JJ (played by Dave Bautista) who is assigned to conduct undercover surveillance of Sophie (played by Chloe Coleman) and her mom. I was expecting a kids movie similar to The Pacifier (starring Vin Diesel). However, I quickly realized that My Spy isn’t as kid friendly as I thought it would be. As a result, here’s what parents need to know about My Spy.
1. My Spy is Rated PG-13
When a movie is rated PG-13, it means that it contains some material that may be inappropriate for children under 13 years of age (aka pre-teenagers). That seems pretty general to me, though. So what exactly does this movie contain that makes it PG-13?
2. My Spy Contains Violence
My Spy is more violent than I thought it would be. Characters are killed and in one particular scene, a character is stabbed to death. There are also other weapons used, including guns and grenades. And because it’s an action movie, expect car chases and explosions.
3. Profanity
There’s also a lot of profanity in My Spy, not only from JJ but also Sophie. Like the violence, I wasn’t expecting the excessive use of profanity in this movie. Examples of curse words used in this movie are “b***h, s**t, d**k, and a*s.
4. Sexually Suggestive Scenes
There aren’t any sexually suggestive scenes in My Spy. There is a romance between two of the characters, which includes flirting and dancing, but that’s the extent of it.
5. Mature Content
This movie deals with serious issues like attempted murder and blackmail. Several of the characters, including Sophie, are put in life threatening situations. The movie tries to downplay it with comedic relief, but it’s part of the movie nonetheless.
Overall Thoughts
As a person who loves action movies, I really enjoyed My Spy. Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman both did a great job with their roles. The movie also makes for a good popcorn movie, especially with the action combined with comedic relief. However, I thought the movie would be geared more for kids. And while older kids will probably enjoy it, expect it to be violent with a lot of profanity. My son (who is almost 8 years old) watched the movie with me and he really struggled with the stabbing scene. I talked him through it and told him we could stop watching the movie. He opted to continue watching it, though. I also had to keep telling him that the curse words were not appropriate. Overall, I think this movie is geared more towards children that are 10 years old and older.
ABOUT My Spy
My Spy follows JJ a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista) who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family. When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment, she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.
