Wolfwalkers on Apple TV+ is a Powerful and Entrancing Film

Wolfwalkers, made by the animation studio Cartoon Saloon, is a powerful and entrancing film that will keep your attention for its entire 103 minute runtime. Available for streaming on Apple TV+ beginning on December 11, 2020, Wolfwalkers is set in an English run outpost in Ireland in 1650. It provides a compelling narrative of two girls, from very different backgrounds, who bond over their mutual love of adventure.

Robyn, who recently moved to the Irish outpost with her father, wants nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps as a hunter and woodsman, an occupation that women at that time were not allowed to pursue. Despite pressure from her father to conform, ostensibly for her own safety, she makes her way to the forest to help her father hunt wolves. There, she meets Mebh, a free spirited girl who lives among the wolves of the forest who has the incredible ability to take the form of a wolf when she sleeps. The two form an instant connection with one another that changes Robyn’s views of the wolves completely. Together, the two of them attempt to thwart the efforts of the English Lord Protector to destroy the forest and the wolves.

While rated PG, the film contains many harrowing moments where the characters are in actual and existential peril. In order to survive, the characters must move past their fears, something the excellent script and direction of the movie leaves in doubt until the epic conclusion.

Wolfwalkers is gorgeously animated in an impressionist style, with vibrant colors and vivid backgrounds. One of the unique features of the movie is how some of the backgrounds in the movie, such as the outpost, are rendered in an almost flat medieval style which creates an interesting juxtaposition with the action occurring in the foreground.

This movie is intense, especially in the third act. The narrative tension, while it will keep some viewers on the edge of their seat, can leave some viewers, including younger children, in distress. Ultimately, Wolfwalkers earns its PG rating while never playing it safe and is a must watch for any adult or child who enjoys animated features.

In a time of superstition and magic, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn Goodfellowe, journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night.
