Is Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure a Kid Friendly Video Game?

My family and I have a Nintendo Switch and now that my son is old enough to play video games, we are always on the lookout for video games or mobile games that are kid friendly. My son was excited when he found out that he was going to be able to play Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure on the Nintendo Switch. Listed below are reasons Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a kid friendly video game!

My son is very focused when playing Scrat's Nutty Adventure.

It’s Based on the Ice Age Movies

My son loves the Ice Age movies so as soon as I told him there was a video game based on Ice Age and Scrat, he became extremely excited. Especially since Scrat, a prehistoric squirrel, is his favorite character in the movie. And just like the Ice Age movies, this game takes place in prehistoric times. In the video game, Scrat is trying to get his acorn back from an alien civilization.

It’s Rated E

The video game is rated E, which means it’s generally suited for all ages, not just adults or teens. At 7 years old, my son is at a great age for this particular video game. However, because Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a platforming game (more about that below), it may be difficult for children younger than 6 years old to play. There’s a lot of jumping around involved in the game (through the controllers), so coordination is an important aspect of it. However, the levels are well designed and there is also linear action so children will likely know where they need to go to make it to the next level. And while there’s fighting in the game between Scrat and other critters like beetles, there’s no real gratuitous violence and no weapons are involved.

It’s Not Complicated to Play

The objective of the game is very straight forward. There are a total of 4 levels. In each level, the goal is to collect an acorn, beat the boss, finish the level, and move on to the next level. In order to make it through each level, Scrat has to navigate a variety of terrain, from ice to lava. The ultimate goal is for Scrat to recover his acorn from the Scratazon Temple. Throughout his journey, he fights critters like flying bugs and crabs. One of the terrains that Scrat must navigate is ice.

It’s a Platform Game

As I mentioned above, Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a platform game. Unlike other platform games, which can be unforgiving when a character falls down, Scrat’s Nutty Adventure has checkpoints that are generously placed throughout the levels. So if Scrat “dies”, it’s likely that Scrat will restart at a point close to where he died in the game. My son did struggle with some of the platforming actions because the platforms move, but for the most part he was able to do it on his own.

It’s Available for Different Gaming Systems

My son played Scrat’s Nutty Adventure on the Nintendo Switch but it’s also available for several other gaming systems like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC Digital. There are games that we’d like to play, but we aren’t able to because we just have a Nintendo Switch. With Scrat’s Nutty Adventure, it doesn’t matter since it’s compatible with most major gaming systems.

Overall Thoughts

Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is now one of my son’s favorite video games. He loves describing the game to me and is excited when he gets to play it. When I asked him why he liked the game, he said “Because it’s like you are adventuring in the game. You have to jump on stones and logs to cross the water. And I also see mammals! And also, there are kinds of purple crystals and you have to collect them.” So there you go - Scrat’s Nutty Adventure from the perspective of a 7 year old 🙂

My family loves these movies. My favorite is Diego, as he changed from a villain to join the new pack with Sid and Manny. They are all great characters though!
